Buckarooz Deer Antlers- Super Long Lasting Dog Treat

Are you looking for an extremely long lasting dog chew for your dog?

We have tested many dog chew treats and recently discovered the Buckarooz Deer Antlers.

These dog chews can last up to a month!

These terrific chews do not splinter, have been easy on your dog's digestive system, and last forever. Antlers for dogs are much less likely to chip or splinter when they are being chewed than processed bones. The chewing action grinds the antler chew down slowly.

The Buckarooz Deer Antlers come from Free Range deer that have naturally shed their antlers.

Deer shed their antlers only once a year in late winter, early spring, when mating season is over.

Antlers have virtually no odor or residue to get on your carpet or furniture.

Chew antlers contain many beneficial nutrients and nothing artificial.

Deer antlers are filled with marrow high in calcium and phosphorous- great nutrients for building and mainting your dog's overall good health.

The only processing involves cutting the antlers to size and packaging.

Since this a natural appendage on a buck (male deer), these antlers will vary in width, length and shape. No two antler will be the same.

Each Buckarooz Antlers are cleaned and cut. The tips are grinded so that there are no sharp ends.

If you are looking for a Healthy, safe alternative to rawhide, then the Buckarooz Deer antler dog chews are a great choice.
Mickey's Pet Supplies carries the 6-7" Premium, 8-9" Premium and the 10-12" MONSTER size
Great selection for any size dog.
Remember that Buckarooz antlers are nutrient packed & marrow filled, have only 1 ingredient, are a renewable resource, have no added hormones, antibiotics, animal by-products, steroids, or preservatives and are the longest lasting dog chew available.

Nina Ottosson Dog Puzzle Toys at Mickey's Pet Supplies

The Nina Ottosson dog puzzle toys are here at Mickey's Pet Supplies.
These dog puzzle toys are very much appreciated and are used by dogs and other animals and their owners in many countries.
Theses interactive dog toys are also recommended by dog psychologists, veterinaries, dog-trainers and other dog-owners. Nina Ottosson has worked with the development and design of dog-activating toys/games that will mentally stimulate the dog, i.e. “brain exercises” in a fun and creative way. The toys are also easy to get out and use indoors and are specially developed to match the dog’s natural movements and instincts.
Activating – Problem Solving The dog puzzle toys are meant for the dog to work with problem solving in different ways, by finding hidden dog snacks, e.g. to lift blocks, push pieces, turn discs, push blocks, put blocks inside something etc.
All dogs need to use their head sometimes in order to keep healthy. Some dogs need more brain activity than others. If dogs are not provided with an outlet for its energy in the form of different types of activity or other stimulation, they can sometimes find their own “activity” which we as dog-owners often do not appreciate, like for instance chewing things to pieces, becoming aggressive or just generally over-active. The activity toys are also very good to use when the dog for various reasons can not move about freely, e.g. when injured or limping etc. Activating a dog can be anything from letting the dog do tracking in the woods, teaching it different tricks, obedience training or hiding a snacks in a room and let the dog find it. In the summer when the weather is good and it is not raining, the dogs normally get more stimulation, it is easier and more fun to be out and play and think of activities with your dog. In the autumn and winter it can be boring to be out when it is raining, snowing and windy. At the same time it is often hard to vary the activities indoors and think of fun activities that are entertaining, simple and stimulating. Hence, Nina Ottosson developed a wonderful line of dog-activating or interactive dog toys.
The Nina Ottosson puzzle toys/games for dogs are easy to get out, and fun to use both for the dog and the dog-owner. While the games are being used the dog and the dog-owner will get a chance to have more contact with each other. Check out the Dog Spinny, Dog Tornado, Dog Brick and Dog Magic puzzle toys and stimulate your dog's mind.

The inside edges are covered with industrial grade luggage material and are sewn with 2 rows of cross-stitching, then 3 rows of linear. Each squeaker inside the toy is sewn into a safety pocket. Feliway Spray For Cats helps stop urine marking & scratching

Feliway Spray is a wonderful product used to help with cats and unwanted behavior.
This spray help control stress related behaviors such as urine marking and vertical scratching naturally Comforts cats in stressful environments.

Feliway is a synthetic copy of the feline facial pheromone, used by cats to mark their territory as safe and secure.
By mimicking the cat’s natural facial pheromones, Feliway creates a state of familiarity and security in the cat's local environment
Both male and female cats, because of hormonal and behavior problems, can start spraying urine on objects or areas. Feliway contains pheromone-like substances which discourages this behavior when it is applied to the area the pet has sprayed. One depression of the Feliway pheromone spray nozzle should be applied approximately 4" from the site, 8" from the floor. Only one spray per application site is necessary. Urine marks and prominent objects should be treated one to two times daily for 30 days. Maintenance application every two to three days may be necessary in some situations.
You will find all the Feliway products at Mickey's Pet Supplies

Drinkwell Pet fountains Review

Do you have a house with multiple pets? If you are like many pet owners, you will find your cat or dogs water bowl always empty. Cats especially like to get up on counters and stand under the faucet just waiting for fresh flowing water.
The Drinkwell pet fountain is the perfect solution to giving your pet the fresh water that they want and need.
The Drinkwell pet fountains aerate and filter water constantly, providing fresh, cool water in a constantly flowing stream. Just like in nature, animals are attracted to fresh, flowing water.
Developed by a veterinarian for her cat. These pet fountains are self-contained and easy to use.
Just fill them up and plug them in. Replacing the filter every couple of weeks and cleaning them every week will keep them flowing smoothly.
We highly recommend the Drinkwell 360 pet fountain. Our four cats and labrador all love it.

Jesusita fire survivors- Fawn & Bobcat

The Jesusita Fire in Santa Barbara , CA last week caused these two to take shelter together. The fawn is 3 days old and the bobcat about 3 weeks. The fawn came from somewhere in the fire and the bobcat from Carpentaria. They immediately bonded and snuggled together under a desk in the Santa Barbara County Dispatch Office for several hours.

Animal Planet is reporting the bobcat kitten was rescued near Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ranch, where it was dehydrated and near death.
They rescued the fawn during last week's wildfire. Although wild animals, especially of separate species, are never placed together due to regulations, in this emergency situation, they had no choice. During the mayhem of the fire, they were forced to put animals anywhere they could, since they had run out of crates large enough for the fawn. The kitten ran to the fawn, and it was instant bonding. Animal Planet is reporting the bobcat kitten was rescued near Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ranch, where it was dehydrated and near death.

Pet travel International Requirements

http://www.aphis.usda.gov/import_export/animals/animal_exports_pets.shtml

Export - Pets and Animals
Taking Your Pet to a Foreign CountryAPHIS is one of three Federal agencies that you will encounter as you travel with your pet.
APHIS Web Information:
We have a web page that provides general information on " Traveling With Your Pet ".
If you are taking a pet to another country (permanently or for a visit), contact that country's consulate or embassy for information about any requirements that you must meet. A listing of consulates can be found at the U.S. Department of State website.
International health certificates for the export of animals from the United States are completed by the APHIS accredited veterinarian who certifies animal health status, conducts tests, and records test results for the individual animals being exported. Completed and signed international health certificates for the export of animals from the United States must be endorsed by a Veterinary Services area office in order to be valid. To obtain the USDA endorsement of an international health certificate or any other documents relating to traveling with your pet, the documents must be completed by an APHIS Accredited Veterinarian.
The APHIS Area Office for your state can assist you with your questions relating to traveling with your pet, help you locate an Accredited Veterinarian, and inform you of the fee(s) for the USDA endorsement(s). You should check with your current Veterinarian to determine if he/she is an APHIS Accredited Veterinarian. You can locate the VS Area Office for your State at: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_health/area_offices/.
Please note that the National Center for Import and Export can not endorse international health certificates for any kind of animals including pets. For health certificate endorsement please contact your local VS Area Office (http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_health/area_offices/)
The United States has minimal requirements for animals to be exported to other countries. Your Area Veterinarian-in-Charge can provide you with the current regulations, tests, and inspections required. Each country may have other specific health requirements for entry of animals. These requirements are established by the importing country, not the United States. Other countries may also have their own certificate format for export. Since export requirements frequently change, obtain the current export requirements from the Veterinary Service office in your area before each shipment. We recommend that you also contact the country's consulate or embassy to ensure that you have the most current information. Do not rely solely on information provided by brokers and exporters. The VS web site has limited export requirements for select countries for pets at: Animal Export Regulations.
Other Federal Web sites:
In addition to our web site, you should visit the web sites of the two other Federal agencies that have a role in the import/export of animals:
US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
US Customs Service

Drinkwell Pet Fountain Review

Drinkwell pet fountain instructions & review by Mickey's Pet Supplies discount online pet supplies
Drinkwell pet fountains are the most healthy way to give your pet a source of fresh filtered drinking water and we have tested these Drinkwell pet fountains with our cats, thus a full product review
Drinkwell pet fountains were originally designed by a veterinarian , Dr. Burns to help with her cat, Munchkin's need for fresh running water. Cats are especially susceptible to urinary tract infections, so they require regular hydration. Cats love faucets and sinks and fresh running water. The Drinkwell pet fountain encourages your cat or dog to drink fresh running water. Also, fresh flowing water is aerated and cooler than standing water. The Drinkwell pet fountain has a charcoal filter which keeps the water fresh. We started with the Drinkwell 360 pet fountain as we have 4 cats and a dog. The Drinkwell 360 pet fountain is designed for multiple pet households, by giving pet owners an ability to customize their Drinkwell 360 pet fountain with the five interchangeable spout rings. Your cats or dogs can all drink from the same pet fountain. The initial set-up was easy. We removed the circular pet fountain and cleaned it thoroughly and then read the directions for set-up. There is a cone that fits onto the circular base and then an insert that accepts the tubular filter. There is a flow control that fits on top of the filter in the cone. Simply plug the AC adapter into a nearby outlet, fill with water to the indicated level and it is ready. It runs very quietly. All four of our cats came to see what the new device was. They were a little shy at first, but then they began to lick at the falling water. My oldest cat, Boston was very intrigued and will watch the water for awhile and then proceed to put his paws into the flowing water and wash himself, then I found he was actually swiping and playing at the water. Who knew that the Drinkwell pet fountain could be entertaining for your cats or dogs too? We noticed about a month after running the Drinkwell pet fountain that the water was not flowing as freely. I knew it was time to clean it. I purchased the brush kit and basically read the instructions again to make sure I was cleaning the pump properly. Filters should be changed approximately every 2 weeks. Replacement filters for Drinkwell 360 pet fountain come in a box of three and are inexpensive. In order to clean the Drinkwell pet fountain, you must unplug the power, remove the flow control cap & spout ring. Now remove the filter housing by twisting the filter housing counter clockwise to the unlock position. Lift up and set aside. Empy the water from the pet fountain, now remove the cone pice by twisting counter clockwise to unlock the tabs. Lift up and set aside. Next, flip the bowl upside down and unhook the electrical cord from the 2 cord clips. This allows you to pull the cord through. This is probably the most important step in keeping the Drinkwell pet fountain clean. You must remove the pump. First remove the intake tube by lifting up on the intake tube holder to free it from the pump. This allows you to remove the pump. The intake tube can then be pulled from the intake tube holder. Clean the fountain parts with warm water and diluted dish soap. You can also put the fountain in the top rack of the dishwasher, but remove the pump before. In order to reach all the spots in the fountain and pump, the Drinkwell Cleaning Kit (a 3 brush kit) is available at Mickey's Pet Supplies for a very low price. We actually took the pump's intake plate off by putting a fingernail under each side, then we removed the stator, using a fingernail. Once you have the stator out you can remove the impeller (held in place magnetically). We cleane all the parts of the pump with the Drinkwell Cleaning Kit motor brush and washed thoroughly and replaced all the parts. We then put in a new filter cartridge and re-filled with fresh water. Everything is working great. The next feature we added was the Drinkwell Aqua Garden. This is hydroponic seeds of wheat grass. Simply clip it on to the fountain and in about 4 days you'll see sprouts. At a week we had 5 inch tall blades of grass. I have one cat that has kidney disease and she is the one that loves the wheat grass. I highly recommend the Drinkwell pet fountains. We had to try them before we would sell them to our customers. The Drinkwell pet fountain receives a 5 out of 5 stars for our cats.

Dog Parks- and Rules

What is a dog park?
The ideal dog park is a designated, fenced-in area
where people can bring their dogs to play and run
off-leash. A dog park can be a great place to share
and distribute information pertaining to dog care and
training. For dog owners with limited mobility, it can be
a place to socialize with other dog owners and exercise
their dogs.
Why have a dog park?
A report on off-leash dog parks by Portland Parks and
Recreation states that “There is a newly identified parks
user group: Dogs and their owners. This user group is
drawn to parks for open space, fresh air, exercise and
socialization for themselves and their pets. Coming to a
park is their chosen form of recreation, much the same
as jogging or biking. They are legitimate park users.”
Did you know...
There are more than 619 dog parks in the U.S. and
483 in Canada according to www.dogpark.com?

Typical dog park rules:
Aggressive dogs are not allowed.
Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their
dogs.
Dogs should not be left unattended.
Dogs should be up-to-date on vaccinations.
No food is allowed in the park.
Small children are not allowed in the park.
Older children are allowed in the park with a parent.

The Community Benefits of Dog Parks are:
Socializes and exercises dogs in a safe
environment.
Promotes responsible pet ownership.
Provides elderly and disabled owners with an
accessible place to exercise their companions.
Enables dogs to legally run off-leash.
Promotes public health and safety.
Provides a tool for realistic enforcement of dog
control laws.

Your dog should be on a leash from your car until reaching the inside of the no-leash area of the dog park. Mickey's Pet Supplies has Lupine leashes and collars that are guaranteed for life.

Couple Pleads Guilty in Toxic Pet Food Case

Couple pleads guilty in toxic pet food case
Pair brought melamine-tainted wheat gluten from China into the U.S.
By HEATHER HOLLINGSWORTH – 2 days ago

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A company and its owners have pleaded guilty to distributing a tainted ingredient used to make pet food that killed potentially thousands of dogs and cats. Chinese national Sally Qing Miller, 43, and her husband, Stephen S. Miller, 56, along with their Las Vegas-based company, Chemnutra Inc., pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of selling adulterated food and one count of selling misbranded food, both misdemeanors. They initially were charged with 13 counts of introduction of adulterated food into interstate commerce, 13 counts of introduction of misbranded food into interstate commerce and one felony count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The charges were contained in a February 2008 federal indictment that alleged the Millers and ChemNutra, along with two Chinese companies, brought wheat gluten tainted with the chemical melamine into the U.S. It was then sold to pet-food makers, and thousands of cats and dogs reportedly became sickened or died. In 2007, the case resulted in a nationwide recall of more than 150 brands of pet food. "The conduct of these defendants in violating federal health and safety standards caused the deaths and illness of thousands of family pets, as well as anxiety among dog and cat owners across the country and economic harm to many pet food manufacturers," Acting U.S. Attorney Matt J. Whitworth said in a news release. The sentencing hearing has not been scheduled. The Millers face up to two years in federal prison without parole, plus a fine up to $200,000 and an order of restitution. ChemNutra is subject to a fine up to $400,000 and an order of restitution.
Probation, fines likelyBut Robert J. Becerra, an attorney who represented Sally Qing Miller and Chemnutra, said the company, the Millers and the government agreed that probation and a fine were an appropriate sentence. "The Millers and ChemNutra look forward to putting both this case and this tragic matter behind them and hope that today's enhanced awareness of food safety issues will prevent this from ever happening again," Becerra said. Lance Sandage, defense attorney for Stephen Miller, the owner and chief executive officer of Chemnutra, did not immediately return phone calls Tuesday seeking comment. Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. and Suzhou Textiles, Silk, Light Industrial Products Arts and Crafts I/E Co. were indicted with 13 felony counts of introduction of adulterated food into interstate commerce and 13 felony counts of introduction of misbranded food into interstate commerce. The indictment also names Mao Linzhun, Xuzhou's owner, and Zhen Hao Chen, Suzhou's president.
Melamine boosted protein contentThe indictment also alleged that Suzhou Textiles, an export broker, mislabeled 800 metric tons of tainted wheat gluten manufactured by Xuzhou to avoid inspection in China. Suzhou then did not properly declare the contaminated product it shipped to the U.S., the indictment said. It also said the shipment was falsely declared to the Chinese government in a way that would avoid a mandatory inspection of the company's plants. According to the indictment, ChemNutra picked up the melamine-tainted product at a port of entry in Kansas City, then sold it to makers of various brands of pet foods. The indictment alleges that Xuzhou added the melamine to artificially boost the protein content of the gluten to meet the requirements specified in Suzhou's contract with ChemNutra. Prosecutors said adding the melamine, which would allow it to pass chemical inspections for protein content, was cheaper than adding protein to the gluten. Chinese authorities shut down Xuzhou Anying and revoked its license in 2007.

Giardia- Diagnosis and Treatment

Recently we acquired a new puppy, soon after we noticed her stool was light in color, oily and loose. We suspected worms or Giardia. The vet had us bring a fresh stool sample and under microscopic analysis Giardia was found. She was on a course of Flagyl(metronidazole) for 7 days and everything seemed fine. About a week later, she started again with very loose and light colored stool. Again, she had Giardia. We decided to do some research on this parasite and wanted to share this information with all dog and cat owners.

What is Giardia?
Giardia are actually protozoans (single celled organisms) and are commonly found in the intestines of many animals, including dogs and cats. A small percentage of animals can carry Giardia their entire life and never show any symptoms. Infection with Giardia is called Giardiasis. Puppies show diarrhea, have very odoriforous, bloody or mucousy stool with gas. Other symptoms are weight loss, listlessness, mucus in the stool, and poor appetite. Giardia affects the health of your dog or cat. Untreated, this parasite will impede your animals ability to utilize the nutrients in their food.
How are animals infected with Giardia? Dogs and cats become infected with Giardia by eating the cyst form of the parasite, then in the small intestine, this cyst opens and releases a trophozite. Trophozite have hair-like structures that flap back and forth allowing them to move inside the small intestine. These trophozites attach to the animal's intestinal wall, reproduce. It is unknown at what stage this happens, but this trophozite then encapsulates, produces a cyst and then that cyst is excreted in the animals feces.
Now, another animal that comes in contact with grass, dirt or water that has been contaminated with the feces can become infected.
Diagnosis: Diagnosis is confirmed by finding the cysts or motile stages in feces by microscopic examination. A negative report does not rule out Giardia! Because cysts are only passed periodically, it is important to have several fecal exams done. At least 3 fecal exams are recommended over a period of 7-10 days. Vets recommend at least one fecal exam one week after finishing a course of Metronidazole or Panacur.
Treatment: Fenbendazole (Panacur) is the recommended drug to remove gastrointestinal parasites. Metronidazole (Flagyl) daily for at least 7-14 days is another treatment. Our vet has our 12 week old labrador puppy on both now. In order to help establish a healthy gut, she also recommended Fortiflora powder.
The most important thing about ridding your animals of this horrible parasite is to keep everything clean. You can use solutions of Lysol, bleach, and quaternary ammonium compounds against Giardia. In other words, take all the toys and wash with a small amount of bleach. Wash the water and food bowls every time they are used and disinfect with bleach. I wipe down my tile floor in my kitchen now once a day with a bleach solution.
We are also making sure to wipe her anus after defecating and wiping her paws with baby wipes everytime she has walked outside.
I didn't mention that we also have four cats, all who are on Flagyl for 7 days. Giving a cat this medication is difficult, as it dissolves quickly and will fizz in their mouth.
I take a Greenies Pill pocket, break it in half and then mold it exactly over the pill. I then make sure I push it down the cats throat.
Giardia is a tough parasite to get rid of, so you must be diligent with treatment and the disinfection process, otherwise you will always be in battle with this monster.
Prevention of infection: Giardia live in cold wet environments like lawn, parks, streams. So keeping your dog or cat from these environments can be difficult. I would recommend disinfecting your dog's paws after walks and don't allow them to drink from ponds or streams while out. It is also a good idea to keep your dog bathed to help wash any unwanted Giardia cysts off the coat.
Kennel owners have a huge problem in keeping this disease contained. Cleaning the kennels with a 1 part bleach to 5 parts water solution(1:5) or 1:10 solution of bleach can usually kill the cysts within one minute. Make sure you allow this area to dry for several days before bringing the dogs back to the kennel area. Again, clean the perianal areas as much as possible.
Transmission to humans? I have been doing research on this, and yes, this disease is transmittable to humans. Make sure all those who play and handle your animals wash their hands often with an antibacterial soap for a long enough time and with warm water. This should be emphazised especially with small children that crawl on the floor where your animals have been.

Kitten found to have rabies

Cat with rabies scares Graham family
Friday, June 05, 2009
By Cherry Young
One Young County family recently had an unusual rabies scare. According to Graham Animal Control Officer Kim Mills, the family had a 6 to 8 week old kitten turn up with rabies."Usually baby animals don’t contract rabies, but the thing is if they hadn’t checked this little kitty, chances are we could have lost somebody," said Mills. "But thank God, she had the wisdom to go ahead and take the kitten in."The kitten was born to a stray or wild mother, said Dr. Tim Odom, and several people had handled the kittens.
When the kitten started exhibiting strange behavior, the family called the vet."They called to say it was acting strange, and they were going to bring it in the next day. It died during the night," said Odom.Odom sent the kitten off, and it tested positive for rabies. The other four kittens in the litter were all negative, but the mother cat has not been located.Seven members of the family were forced to undergo a round of post-exposure rabies injections.Dianne Grissom, director of infection prevention and control for Graham Regional Medical Center, said when it comes to rabies, keeping your pets up to date on their vaccinations should be your first order of business.
Grissom also advised if a person is bitten, he should call animal control or the sheriff’s office, clean the wound with soap and water and call his physician immediately. If the animal is a pet, it should be quarantined immediately. If the animal is a wild animal, or if it ran away, try to give as much information as possible to animal control so the animal can be found and quarantined."If their physician determines a need for vaccine and/or immune globulin, their physician can refer them to the Department of State Health Services. An order from a physician is required for the Department of State Health Services to administer the post-exposure treatment," she said."The Department of State Health Services has said that in this region, they’ve had a large amount of rabid skunks. They’ve had some issues with rabies this year." Mills said the shots are not as bad as they used to be."They just give them to you in your arm once every so many days," she said. Mills said it’s important if bitten to bring the animal in."If we don’t have the animal to test, we have to assume that animal had rabies," she said.If the animal is tagged, it will be quarantined and observed for 10 days. If it is a stray or wild animal, it is euthanized and sent for testing.Mills said that if a quarantined animal does not exhibit signs of being rabid within days, the coast is clear."If they start acting funny on the 12th day and turn up positive for rabies, there was no way enough of the virus had been in its saliva to pass it on in a domesticated animal," she said. She added that being bitten is not the only way to become exposed."A scratch is just as bad as a bite," said Mills.Odom said rabies can affect an animal in one of two ways. Either it will act like it is in a stupor or will become aggressive. He added that the best thing to do is get your dogs, cats and ferrets vaccinated against rabies, and a vaccine is legally required annually to own an animal within the city limits of Graham. The state requires rabies vaccinations to be current as well, and both entities recognize only veterinarian administered vaccines. "We sure recommend that they get all of their animals vaccinated for it. It seems like we’re having more skunks in town or just in the area. It’s fairly prevalent in the skunks, so we just need to keep everything vaccinated," Odom said.Mills added that not only is it dangerous to take in wild animals, it’s also against the law."A wild animal can carry rabies for up to a year. Someone takes in a baby raccoon then all of the neighbor kids are playing with it, possibly exposing them," she said. "Yes, they are cute, but puppies and kitties are, too."

Bringing Home A New Kitten

What to do when bringing home a new kitten

So you have found the most adorable kitten and want to know what do I need?

1. Litter box and cat litter
2. Food and water bowls
3. kitten food
4. kitten toys
5. Veterinarian
6. Introducing new kitten to children or other pets

First and foremost, you will need to put in some due diligence as you prepare your home for the new family member.

It is a good idea to have your kittens litter box in the appropiate place before brining her home and you will want to have a specific spot for the cat litter box pre-arranged. It should be in a quiet area of your home. It should not be in a noisy laundry room or by a furnace that makes noise. Your cat will like her privacy, but don't want continual noise. Your litter box should not be too tall for your kitten to get in and out of. Start with the smaller, more basic one. As your kitten gets older and bigger, you can move up to the larger size.

You should pick a type of litter that you feel comfortable with. Today, most people like the ease of a clumping litter, but do not use the scented litter. Cats normally prefer very fine-grained litter. Think of what cats in the wild do. They do their business in the sand. With clumping cat litter, it is easy to scoop out the urine or feces and discard. Note: Do not throw any cat litter in a toilet. It will quickly form a block in your sewer system. Instead, have a small inexpensive trash container with a liner near your box and simply put it in there. I use the diaper disposal bags from the dollar store. I simply put them by my scooper and trashcan. I scoop out the soiled litter and put it into the bag, tie it up and then put in the trash.

Choosing your food and water bowls. It is best to buy a set of ceramic or stainless steel bowls. Start with the smaller ones. Make sure that your kitten has a specific place to be fed and drink water in your home. Again, privacy is best. Make sure you clean the food bowl once a day and fill the water bowl with fresh water daily. You may want to purchase a pet fountain to provide continual fresh water.

There are many brands of kitten food on the market. Make sure that you buy kitten food and not cat food. Your veterinarian can tell you how much you should be feeding and what type of food. They will be happy calculate the exact amount of food to feed. Make sure your kitten food has a high ratio of protein in it's ingredient list. It should be at least 9-10% protein.

Toys for a new kitten are like buying toys for a baby. Kittens need toys that are safe. Do not give them a toy with a bell or anything that can be pulled off and swallowed unless you are holding it while playing and monitoring your kitten. They like things they can chase. I highly recommend that any cat toy is only out when actively playing with your kitten. That way you will never risk the kitten swallowing anything harmful. Always supervise play with children and a new kitten. You can buy a pull and chase toy like Smarty cat feather frolic. Anything that you can pull and the kitten can chase is great.

Do your research before choosing your veterinarian. Talk to friends and see who they recommend. Remember a veterinary clinic that has multiple vets on staff can be the best choice. Also, ask what hours they are open. My veterinary clinic is open every day. Ask if they also have all the equipment and area for immediate care. Find out where the nearest immediate care veterinary facility is also. Have that and your veterinarian's phone numbers on the refrigerator and programmed in your cell phones.

I have found patience is the key to introducing a new kitten to it's new surroundings. It is necessary that you ease the kitten through this adjustment period, especially when there are young children around, as well as other pets. In addition to supervising your children when they are playing with the new kitten, you should teach them how to handle the kitten with the utmost care and respect.

If you have other pets in the house you will need to separate your kitten and introduce her slowly. If you have cats living with you already, you will have to put the new kitten in a room with a door. Let your other cats sniff under the door and play with her paws. Do this for at least 24 hours before letting your existing cats see the new kitten. The same thing should happen if you have a dog in the house. Let your dog smell the kitten from under a door for at least 24 hours before allowing them to see or interact with each other. Remember the kitten is the stranger in the house to your other pets. Let your other pets gradually welcome her.

Traits of Portuguese Water Dog

Portuguese Water Dogs(PWDs)are excellent companions. These dogs are highly intelligent and are easily trained in obedience and agility skills. They are considered working dogs. They have been used for therapy dogs and as assistance dogs for the deaf.
Portuguese water dogs enjoy being petted and once acquainted adjust well to strangers. They tend to stay stay close to their masters. Portuguese water dogs tend to bond with one primary or "alpha" family member. Some speculate that this intense bonding arose in the breed because the dogs were selected to work in proximity to their masters on small fishing boats, unlike other working dogs such as herding dogs and water dogs that range out to perform tasks.
This dog desires attention and prefers to be engaged in activity within sight of a human partner. This is not a breed to be left alone for long periods of time, indoors or out.
The Portuguese water dog will tend to jump up in greeting humans. This is a behavior that should be limited with training. They will tend to stand on their hind legs in order to find food on counters also.

These dogs love to be active, so keep this in mind when considering this breed. The fur on this breed has no under-coat, so many people will choose a Portuguese water dog because it is considered hypo-allergenic.

President Barack Obama has chosen this breed for the first dog. He was given a Portuguese water dog as a gift from Senator Edward M. Kennedy. The Obama family wanted a dog that was hypo-allergenic because their oldest daughter, Malia is has allergies. The Obama daughters named their new pet Bo because they have cousins with a cat named Bo and because Michelle's late father, Fraser Robinson, nickname was Diddley.

We all wish President Obama, his family and Bo the best.

Drinkwell Pet Fountain Review

The Drinkwell pet fountain has proved a huge hit with my four cats. I purchased the Drinkwell 360 as a test to see how my cats would adapt to drinking from a fountain.
Here is what happened: The first night my alpha male ocicat, Cody approached it with his ears forward and watched. After about an hour he started to bat at the water flowing from the top.
Next, his sister Kyla went up to it, looking very curious and watched for a while, then started to play with the water. The most interested was my oldest, Boston. He is an indoor-outdoor cat and is the most "seasoned" soul of all of them. He is like a big "Garfield" cat. We call him "Big Boss". He did like the others at first, but then I caught a glimpse of him, licking the falling water. He then started to play with the falling water, batting at it and then licking. Everyone is completely drinking from the flowing waterfall and sometimes at the circular holding tray. I am ordering the tray and wheat grass next. I really think this is a great product and is a must for any cat owner that has had any urinary tract issues with their cats. I have a small 9 1/2 pound grey cat, Mischa, that has kidney disease and felt this may help her live a longer life by encouraging more drinking. You can find this at my store- http://www.mickeyspetsupplies.com/

New Cancer Drug for Dogs Nitrosylcobalamin NO-Cbl

Cancer Breakthrough: Tales Of 'Trojan Horse Drug' And 'Miracle Dogs'

ScienceDaily (Mar. 24, 2009) — Diagnosed with an extremely aggressive form of cancer called anal sac adenocarcinoma, Oscar's future seemed bleak. Bedridden and unresponsive to chemotherapy or radiation, he would be lucky to survive three months. But thanks to an innovative new drug treatment, Oscar's cancer receded and he was walking again within two weeks.
Oscar's recovery was extraordinary enough, but his case was unusual for another reason. Oscar is a Bichon Frise, who scientists reporting in Salt Lake City, Utah at the 237th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society on March 23 call "the Miracle Dog." Joseph A. Bauer, Ph.D., and colleagues described promising results with a drug called nitrosylcobalamin (NO-Cbl) in battling cancer in Oscar and three other canines without any negative side effects. While it gives profound hope to dog owners, NO-Cbl also points to a powerful new cancer treatment for humans — one that infiltrates cancer cells like a biological Trojan horse.
"We are one of the few research groups that is offering to treat dogs with cancer that otherwise have no hope," Bauer said. "With no other options available, most people in this situation opt to euthanize so that their pets don't go through the pain of disease and trauma of surgery."
About six million dogs are diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), pets with cancer provide a win-win opportunity for cancer researchers. Scientists can study new cancer treatments in animals other than lab mice. And pets get access to new treatments that provide hope and in instances like NO-Cbl, additional time.
Bauer put it this way: "The beauty of using a dog or a cat to test a cancer drug is two-fold. First, the animal can get the benefit of the most up-to-date drug in cancer medicine. Second, the NCI gets data on pets that are exposed to the same environmental factors their owners are. They breathe the same polluted air and drink the same polluted water that you and I do every day. If you can find an agent to treat cancer that occurs in a dog with success, there is a higher likelihood that you can take that to the human population and have a much higher response rate than with mice."
Although NO-Cbl has been used in only a few dogs, daily treatments have led to promising results in each case. "In all four dogs, there has been a significant reduction in tumor size without any toxic side effects or discomfort," says Bauer.
Oscar was the first success story. Since then, Bauer has treated two other dogs. A six-year old golden retriever named Buddy was unable to walk due to a spinal tumor pinching essential nerves leading to his right hind leg. After nine months of daily NO-Cbl treatment, Buddy's tumor shrank by 40 percent and he was going on two mile walks. A 13-year-old female Giant Schnauzer with inoperable thyroid carcinoma also showed tumor reductions of 77 percent in less than 10 weeks.
"Our case studies demonstrate anti-tumor efficacy with limited toxicity to normal tissues," Bauer added. "NO-Cbl sensitizes multidrug-resistant cancer cells to the antitumor effects of several different drugs, so it may be valuable when utilized in combination regimes," he added.
The drug targets cancer cells with "biological Trojan horse technology." Cells have receptors for vitamin B12 on their outer surface. The receptors serve as docking ports where molecules of the vitamin, essential for cells to divide and multiply, attach and then enter the cell. In order to divide at their abnormally rapid pace, cancer cells grow extra B12 receptors — 100 times more than normal cancer cells. Scientists have been trying since the 1950s to exploit that vulnerability and make B12-based drugs that attach to the receptors, sneak into the cell, and deliver a knock-out dose of medication.
Bauer and his colleagues from the Cleveland Clinic attached nitric oxide (NO) molecules to vitamin B12. NO kills cancer cells. The B12 acts as the Trojan horse, easily slipping into cancer cells. The subsequent release of toxic NO kills the cancer cells from within.
The team's goal is to successfully treat 10 dogs with NO-Cbl and slingshot the drug into human use as soon as possible. Because of the genetic similarity between dogs and humans, Bauer says his approach should have a much better chance of getting through the FDA's strict drug approval chain.
But Bauer stresses he wants to get the NO-Cbl dog treatment approved, as well. "I'm committed to the animals, and my goal would be to do a dual clinical trial, Phase One human and Phase One dog," says Bauer.
Oscar is still alive and well. Today, Bauer is treating another Golden Retriever named Haley with a spinal tumor.
"This is one of the most rewarding things I've ever done in my life," says Bauer, the owner of a two-year old Beagle. "It gets boring working in the lab, but to see the fruits of your labor in a positive outcome like this and to know you're responsible in some small way, that's pretty cool."

List of POISONOUS PLANTS to pets

Unknown dangers to your pets-- typical garden and house plants

I want to tell you about my cat, Cody. In the Fall of 2007, I moved all my large outdoor potted plants into the garage at the end of the season. I let my cats in the garage to sit on my potting table in front of the window. One night, as I was fixing dinner I noticed my ocicat Cody vomiting a clear greenish liquid tinged in red. I kept watching him and he was vomiting non-stop. I couldn't figure out what was causing this, but I knew it was serious.

I called the 24 hour veterinary service and tucked him in a carrier with a fuzzy blanket and we were in the car. When I arrived, I told them what was happening and they asked "what could he have eaten?" I quite honestly could not think of anything he could have eaten that was green. They immediately rushed him into the examining room and the vet said that his vital signs were weak and he would have to be on I.V. fluids and I should try and figure out what he ingested. I walked around my house trying to figure out what he chewed on and then I walked into the garage and saw my pots with English Ivy.

I now had a possible cause for Cody's distress. I started doing a search for poisonous plants to cats. I really had a hard time finding a complete list of all the poisonous plants. Finally, I saw that English Ivy is considered a toxin to cats.
English Ivy contains triterpenoid saponins, which when ingested, results in vomiting, diarrhea, hypersalivation & abdominal pain and in some cases--coma and death

Cody was on IV fluids and oxygen for over a day and our family was very worried. Finally, Cody seemed to respond to the treatments and basically came back to life. It was also a very costly lesson.

Since finding any information about poisonous plants for pets is hard to find, I thought I would give everyone a list of those toxic plants.
Aloe,Amaryllis, Autumn Crocus, Azalea, Bamboo, Castor Bean, Chrysanthemum, Cyclamen, English Ivy, Kalanchaloe, Lilies, Marijuana, Oleander, Peace Lily (Mauna Loa Peace Lily), Narcissus bulbs, Poinsettia, Pothos, Sago Palm, Schefflera, Yew.

Also, do not feed your cats or dogs ONIONS or GARLIC! These affect the red blood cells, causing life-threatening anemia. Cats are especially sensitive to these- even onion or garlic powder, so never feed your pets table food.

Lilies are especially toxic to cats, and can cause life-threatening kidney failure even in small amounts.

Whenever an animal is exposed to a possible toxin, time is of the essence....Call your vet or 24 hour emergency veterinary hospital

Stem Cell Treatment for Arthritis in Pets

Stem Cell Treatments Used To Ease Arthritis In Pets
Posted on: Tuesday, 17 March 2009, 14:00 CDT Related Video
A new procedure that uses stem cells obtained from fat is providing relief for pets suffering from the aches and pains of arthritis and other ailments.
The procedure, marketed by a company called Vet-Stem Inc. in San Diego, involves injecting dogs with stem cells obtained from fat. It was initially used in horses in 2003, according to the company’s founder and veterinarian Bob Harman.
"Six years later we treated over 3,000 horses from the United States with every kind of injury, from a bad tear of the tendon or ligament to bad arthritis," Harman told the Austin American Statesman.
The company is the first in the nation to offer stem cell treatments using fat tissue for dogs and cats, according to Julie Ryan of Vet-Stem.
After receiving many requests, the company began providing four-hour training sessions on the procedure to veterinarians a year ago.
Three-year-old Samson, a Newfoundland, was still limping badly on one side after undergoing surgery to remove bone fragments in his front legs.
The fragments had caused arthritis in his right leg, Susie Lynch, his owner, told the Austin American-Statesman.
"He was just pretty much laying around all the time," she added.
Then Lynch saw a program on ABC News' "Nightline" about a procedure for dogs that helped ease arthritis by obtaining stem cells from fat in the dogs’ bodies and injecting the cells into the injured areas.
GA_googleFillSlotWithSize("ca-pub-5440138744487553", "News_Main_300x250", 300, 250);
Lynch turned to Lynne Boggs, an Austin, TX-based veterinarian trained in the Vet Stem procedure, and Samson underwent the operation last November.
“It worked,” Lynch said.
"It was amazing.”
"In about 10 days it was like he had a whole different personality; he was energetic.”
“After six weeks, Samson was limping less and less.”
"He prances around and runs and plays with other dogs now," she said.
American Veterinary Association spokesman Michael San Filippo said the group is aware of the procedure, and supports the use of stem cells for animal health. While the association would like to see additional research on the procedure, "anecdotally, we have heard from several pet owners that it does work," he said.
The Vet-Stem procedure costs roughly $2,500- $3,500, according to Harman.
Veterinarians obtain fat from part of a dog's body and send a syringe of it to the company in San Diego. Then, in a four-hour procedure, Vet-Stem uses a digestive enzyme that isolates the stem cells from the fat. These stem cells are then shipped back to the veterinarian overnight, so the cells can be injected into the injured part of a dog’s body the following day.
Harman said the procedure helps reduce swelling and creates new blood vessels and tissue.
"We've treated over 1,500 dogs with arthritis," he said.
Boggs, the Austin, TX-based vet who treated Samson, said she removed a clump of fat from the dog’s abdomen for the procedure because that area has a very high concentration of stem cells.
Samson has improved significantly since the surgery but has not been completely cured, she said.
"The limp has gone to something anyone can see to something I can see; it's much more subtle," she told the Austin American Statesman.
Prior the undergoing the procedure, Samson could walk less than a block before he began limping badly, said Lynch.
But now, "I can walk him as far as I want now."
Boggs said that while some dogs respond very well to the Vet-Stem procedure, others don't respond at all. She used the procedure on another dog with hip arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease, and it ended up helping only with the bowel problem, she added.
"There's no way to know before you go into it," she said.
The primary risk for the dog is in being anesthetized for fat removal, she said.
"I haven't used it enough to say it will be the answer to whatever the problem is," Boggs said.
"I'm game to keep on trying it with owners that understand what's going on."

Dangers of Flea Powders on Kittens

This is an older article, but a must read for cat owners-----
Flea Season is Hopping Around
Friday April 25, 2008
I received a recent email from a heartbroken woman who had lost three 2-week old kittens after dusting them with flea powder. She meant well; she saw that they were covered with fleas and wanted to help them. It is too late to save those kittens, but other readers should know the facts about flea control for cats. I do not personally recommend any flea powders nor flea collars for cats, and definitely not for young kittens. Nor should any flea control product labeled for dogs ever be used on cats of any age.
In 2001, hundreds of cat owners lost their cats after using certain flea products containing either permethrin or methoprene. After hearing hundreds of specific consumer complaints, the EPA investigated the Hartz Mountain Corporation, manufacturer of a variety of pet products, including flea control products. These unnecessary deaths underscore the necessity of reading and understanding labels, not only on food products, but also on flea and tick control products.
Fleas are not only annoying, but they are nasty little critters that carry number of "hitch-hikers" such as tapeworms and the Haemobartonellosis microorganism. I'm sure you'll agree with the importance of stopping flea infestations before they occur, for your cats' comfort and your own peace of mind

Treating Parvo

Treatment for parvoviral infection centers on support. This means that the clinical problems that come up in the course of the infection are addressed individually with the goal of keeping the patient alive long enough for an immune response to generate. We do not have effective anti-virus anti-biotics and must rely on the patient’s immune system for cure.
BE PREPARED FOR A 5-7 DAY HOSPITAL STAYAND A SUBSTANTIAL EXPENSE.INTENSIVE CARE IS NEEDED TO TREAT THIS INFECTION
There are certain basic treatment principles which can be viewed as “must haves” in addressing the parvo puppy. Beyond these basics are some “added pluses” which may or may not contribute to the chance for survival. In order to achieve the usual survival rate of approximately 75-85%, the basics must be delivered. If an owner is less concerned about expense and simply wants to maximize survival chances, some of the optional treatments may be employed.
THE BASICS
“Rolly” Flores - Parvo Survivorjust before discharge from the hospital
FLUID THERAPY: One of the ways parvo can kill is via the metabolic derangements that occur with dehydration. It is crucial to replace the vast fluid losses (from vomiting and diarrhea) with intravenous fluids. Fluids are given as a steady drip rather than simply under the skin so that absorption into the circulation is direct. Potassium is usually added to the fluids in order to maintain electrolyte balance. Dextrose (sugar) is also frequently added as the stress of the disease may lower blood sugar especially in a very small puppy.
ANTIBIOTICS: The second way parvo kills is through bacterial invasion of the circulatory system (“sepsis.”) Since the GI tract is damaged, antibiotics cannot be given orally. They are given either as shots or are added into the IV fluid bag. There are a number of antibiotics which may be selected. Some antibiotics you may see in use include:
*Cefazolin *Baytril *Ampicillin *Gentamycin*Amikacin *Trimethoprim-sulfa *Chloramphenicol
Our hospital tends to prefer Cefazolin as a basic choice. For more information on this drug you may wish to read the Pharmacy Center section on its sister drug: Cephalexin.
CONTROL OF NAUSEA: Patient comfort is a very important part of treatment for any disease but is especially important for parvo treatment as these puppies feel extremely nauseated. Again, the GI tract is too damaged for oral medication so medications are given as injections. There are two popular medications for nausea control:
Metoclopramide: (best given as a continuous drip in the IV fluid set up) If used as separate injections, relief tends to be short lasting and does not provide “around the clock” control. If a continuous drip is used, nausea control lasts as long as the drip is running.
Chlorpromazine: a very strong nausea control medication which lasts 6-8 hours per injection and has the added benefit of a drowsiness side effect (so patients can sleep through most of this uncomfortable time).
Injectable antacids (Tagamet, Zantac, or Pepcid) are often used to prevent ulceration of the esophagus of the esophagus should protracted vomited be a problem.
MONITORING
The following tests are helpful in adjusting parvovirus treatment:
Fecal floatation to rule out worms/internal parasites
The last thing these patients need is a parasite burden contributing to their nausea and diarrhea.
White blood cell counts/complete blood counts
One of the first acts of the parvovirus is to shut down the bone marrow production of immunologic cells (the white blood cells). White blood cell counts are often monitored as the infection is followed.
Urine specific gravity/Azosticks
In order to assess the effectiveness of the fluid therapy, some objective evaluation of dehydration is useful. If adequate IV fluids have been provided then the urine produced will be dilute (as measured by “specific gravity”) and azosticks measures of protein metabolites (which build up in the blood stream) should be at normal levels.
Abdominal Palpation
Abnormal motility of the intestines occurs with this infection. Sometimes an area of intestine actually “telescopes” inside an adjacent area in a process called “intussusception.” This is a disastrous occurrence as intussusception can only be treated surgically and parvo puppies are in no shape for surgery. Euthanasia is usually elected in this event.
Total blood protein
Protein depletion is common when there is heavy diarrhea. If blood proteins drop too low, special IV fluids or even plasma transfusions are needed to prevent massive life-threatening edema.
EXTRA TREATMENT WHICH MAY HELP:
CEFOXITIN (A SPECIAL ANTIBIOTIC) The best antibiotic coverage controls both gram negative and gram positive organisms, both aerobic and anaerobic organisms and does so with minimal side effects. The use of Cefoxitin (brand name Mefoxitin) does an excellent job of covering for the organisms of concern without the kidney side effects of gentamycin or amikacin and without the cartilage side effects of Baytril. Cefoxitin is especially expensive and is frequently reserved for the sickest puppies.
ONDANSETRON (BRAND NAME ZOFRAN) This medication is an especially strong anti-nauseal medication which is useful if the more common medications have failed. This medication is commonly used to control the extreme nausea experienced by people on cancer chemotherapy. While it is highly effective for parvo puppies, it is also very expensive.
SEPTI-SERUM-This product represents anti-serum (antibodies extracted from horses) which binds the toxins of any invading GI tract bacteria. The use of this product is controversial though the veterinary teaching hospital at Auburn University uses it commonly. It is usually given only one time as the equine origin of the product has potential for serious immunological reactions.
PLASMA TRANSFUSIONS In a similar attempt to deliver anti-bodies to the parvo puppy, plasma from a donor dog who has survived parvo is sometimes used. The canine origin of such products reduces the potential for immune reactions but such plasma is not typically available commercially.
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS- There have been many studies indicating the benefits of single doses of these medications in the prevention of septic shock. Repeated doses may cause further GI ulceration (which is obviously something a parvo puppy has enough of). Our hospital favors Flunixin meglumine (brand name banamine) for this use.
NEUPOGEN “Neupogen” is the brand name of a genetically engineered hormone called “granulocyte colony stimulating factor.” This hormone is responsible for stimulating the bone marrow to produce white blood cells and its administration easily overcomes the bone marrow suppression caused by the parvovirus. A recent study did not find increased survival with the addition of this product to the parvo regimen; however, in sicker puppies it may make a significant difference. It is very expensive usually adding $100-$200 to the basic treatment cost.
HOME TREATMENT FOR PARVO
Home treatment for parvo infection is a bad idea when compared to hospitalization and intensive care. Mortality rises substantially and the heavy diarrhea and vomiting lead to heavy viral contamination in the home. Still, if financial concerns preclude hospitalization, home care may be the puppy’s only chance. Fluids will have to be given under the skin at home as will injectable medicines.
IN OUR EXPERIENCE, A PUPPY THAT HASNOT SHOWN OBVIOUS IMPROVEMENT BY THE4TH DAY OF TREATMENT DOES NOT SURVIVE
