Congratulations, you're having a baby! You spent nine months preparing for your newborn, but the American Kennel Club asks what about your other "baby" your dog?
"Most dogs are used to being the 'baby' of the family and many have difficulty adjusting to the new family dynamic," warns AKC's Canine Good Citizen and AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Director and Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, Mary Burch, Ph.D. "However, many gradual adjustments to your lifestyle can help prepare your dog for changes he will experience and ensure a smooth adjustment."
The AKC offers tips on how to ease your dog into this new phase and exciting period of your life. Among them:
- Start early. Begin to make adjustments to your dog's schedule before your baby arrives. Make a list of all the ways your dog's routine will be changed. For example, will your dog's daily walk be switched from morning to afternoon? Will your pup have less one on one time with you?
- Use sight, sound and scent. If any of your friends have babies, you can ask if your dog could be introduced to one of their new babies. Play a CD of a baby crying to acclimate him to the new sound. Before you bring your newborn home, bring a baby blanket home from the hospital so your dog can get used to the infant's scent. When your dog behaves well around these new stimuli, praise and reward him with treats.
- Exercise. One of the best ways to combat any undesired behavior in your dog is through exercise. Make sure that your dog has plenty of time to exert his energy by making the daily walk a priority or hire a dog walker so he doesn't become bored.
- Schedule time with your dog. After the baby arrives, things will be very hectic. To make sure the dog stays a priority, decide on times when you can give your dog a little extra attention-perhaps while the baby is napping or make it a point to have your dog accompany you on walks with your baby.

Louisville Dog Thrown From Moving Vehicle

Another story of unbelievable animal cruelty. Why and how could someone do this to an animal is beyond us. There are several news stories on this trajic event.

It's a race against time, and injury for the dog, only a year old.
On Tuesday, Hope was thrown from a moving vehicle and then immediately hit by an on-coming car.
But the trauma team at the Louisville Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Services is making efforts to keep her alive.
Hope is suffering from fractures in her pelvis, femur, and one in her spine, but doctors are still hoping for the best.
"It's an emotional case for everybody. It's difficult to believe that someone would do that. Ah, we don't work any harder on this case than we do on any others, but it's difficult not to get emotional about these cases," says Dr. Scott Rizzo.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Two animal groups are raising money to help a dog that was thrown from a car traveling on Interstate 65 in Louisville.
The Shamrock Foundation Arrow Fund and No Kill Louisville are accepting donations to help a female border collie they are calling Hope. The Courier-Journal reports medical treatment for the animal could cost up to $12,000.
Metro Animal Services spokeswoman Jackie Gulbe says the animal was thrown Tuesday afternoon from a dark car.
Rebecca Eaves of the Shamrock Foundation Arrow Fund said the dog suffered several fractures and a dislocated hip.

For beginners, puppies, older dogs and dogs that are difficult to motivate.

Dog Tornado has four layers of rotating discs. In three layers there are compartments where treats can be hidden. The dog/cat has to learn to rotate the different layers in different directions with its nose or paw in order to find the hidden goodies. This is for level 2-level 3 players

Dog Brick is rated for level 2-3 and requires your dog to first dislodge the removable bones, then push the sliding covers with their paw or nose to access the hidden dog treats. Watch your dog push open the bones with his sense of smell to find the treats. Made of a durable plastic that is dishwasher safe. The level of difficulty for the Brick can be varied, depending upon the dog's experience and his enthusiasm for the game.

Dog Twister is rated for level 2-3. Your dog is to look for treats by moving one block after another in a circle in different directions; the blocks can also be locked in position by a bone-shaped peg on the up-side of the game. There are depressions under the blocks where treats can be hidden. This puzzle toy is priced a little less than the wooden version and you can put it in the dishwasher to clean.

Level 3
Advanced, for "smart" dogs and dogs that need extra mental stimulation.

Dog Casino -Your dog looks for treats by pulling out the flaps in different directions. In each flap there is a compartment where the treat can be hidden. Increase the degree of difficulty by locking the flaps using the bone-shaped pegs on top.

Whether your dog is an "Einstein" or just not that bright, the Nina Ottosson dog puzzle toys will stimulate your dog's brain. Each dog puzzle toy has a unique design and mechanism that will challenge your dog's mental and physical abilities.
Dogs must work through each of the challenges to reveal the hidden reward-dog treat. Each toy is unique and can be set to different levels of ability for all sizes, ages and breeds of dogs. These toys are tough, hard working and are dishwasher safe.
Let's start with the easiest of the Nina Ottosson dog games- The Dog Brick. The Dog Brick is for skill level-beginner. You start by hiding delicious dog treats under the plastic bone shaped cups. You may start by putting them up at a slight angle or across the indentation to allow the dog to smell and see that there are treats beneath. You can put treats under just one of the bones, some or all of the bone shaped cups. By moving the location of the treat, you can really work your pup to search and locate the treat by smell. Next, in the line-up is the Dog Spinny. This is another basic skill level dog puzzle toy. This toy has only one single removable bone that must be dislodged by your dog. By removing the bone with his paw or mouth, he can then rotate the disk to seek out the dog treats hidden in the compartments below. You can start to move the disk to show him how it is done and he'll get the idea quickly. Gradually reduce the number of treats to encourage him to work harder.
Dog Brick's skill level is rated medium. Your dog must move the sliding bone shaped bricks to discover the treats below. This game comes with 4 plastic bone cups and you can start easy by placing the cups sideways over the treat spot holes. Gradually, introduce your dog to then remove that cup and now sniff and learn to slide the other treat covers to access his rewards.
Hardest on the skill level is the Dog Tornado. This puzzle toy works by having your pup dislodge the plastic bones and then turn the revolving sections to reveal his treats. Of course, with your help, he will quickly learn how to rotate the disks in order to get to the treats below.
We love all of the Nina Ottosson toys, especially during winter. When it's cold and windy and you don't want to venture outside, just bring out your puzzle toys and watch your dog smile. What pup can't resist a great treat and some one on one time with you.
Some of the best tips for interactive play with these toys is to have a controlled session. You should use a light-weight lead when first introducing your dog to these games for controlled play. Keep your play times short and end on a positive note. Don't use excessive treats. Teach your dog to learn and earn their reward. You can even use some of your dog's dry food as treats.
